............................ ..A Brief history of the Orangeville Door

......
In 1999, the town of Orangeville handed to YFC the use of a portable just off one of Orangeville's main roads.  Upon receiving this building, we hired Laurie Johnson from Alliston, and the Door Youth Centre was born in Orangeville.

......When first opened, the Door saw anywhere from 20-50 teens each night it was open.  It was a bit of a rocky time with some misconceptions by people in the town as to what the centre was about and due to the number of needy teens in the area.
......After Laurie left us, we began a search for a new director.  In the meantime, Gillian Sharpe (who now is part of a church plant in B.C.) was the interim director.  Then, from Yonge Street Mission, Jonathan Smith applied for the position and was hired.  The Door quickly picked up momentum again with new teens, new programs and a slew of new volunteers.
......Things seemed to be going well, but then the unimaginable happened.  In April of 2002 one of the Door's teens, Robbie McLennan, was murdered in Dragon Fly Park.  It was a very hard time for the Smiths, volunteers, and for many of the teens.  To this day the repercussions are still seen at the Door. (click here to go to the Robbie Memorial Page.)
